Death at obscure drag strip reminds of racing's dangers

You probably never had heard of Ware Shoals Dragway until Saturday night. If only the track was still unknown.

Death came to the small strip in rural southern South Carolina, when a car in competition went out of control. The driver was killed and spectators were injured.

Anthony Craig Owens of Easley, S.C., was the driver, according to media reports from the Laurens County coroner.

It was just another Saturday night at an obscure place where fans gathered to watch cars roar down a quarter mile of asphalt. But when Owens' car left the track, it flipped and landed on vehicles parked along the side of the track, according to The Associated Press.
