New York City has never been a “good try” kind of town. That applies, quite naturally, to its sporting interests.

The sort of aimless advocacy that might be heard after botched athletic endeavors in other places or arenas of life, personified by phrases like “good effort,” would never sit well in a city that lives by a bottom line predicated on results.

Win in New York or get booed. Win in the postseason or get booed even louder.

In such a demanding and almost entirely professional sports environment, it is worth noting how disappointing just about every New York team has been in recent years.
