A $530 Motivational Tool That Helped Turn CoCo Vandeweghe Around

WIMBLEDON, England — CoCo Vandeweghe’s reward for a first-round loss in the qualifying round at Acapulco, Mexico, last year was a $530 check, barely enough to pay for her hotel room and meals. In a sport where the best players count their winnings in the millions of dollars, this was the turning point.

The defeat came in February 2014, during a time when Vandeweghe could easily have just gone home to Southern California and taken solace, as she often did, in a Double-Double from In-N-Out Burger, plus a milkshake and fries, of course.
