How Rangers pitcher claimed off waivers showed promise facing batters for first time in almost a year

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Right-hander Tyler Wagner's long wait ended Friday in a Rangers' intrasquad game.

Wagner allowed three runners in two scoreless innings in his first appearance against hitters since May 13, 2016, while in the Arizona organization. He missed the remainder of the season because of a strained lat muscle.

"Just going out there and being able to compete again was big," Wagner said. "I haven't been able to compete in a while. That's the part I missed. It was fun to go out and do that."

Wagner, obtained on a waiver claim, has made six major league appearances: three as a starter with Milwaukee in 2015 and three as a reliever with Arizona last season.
