Instant Reaction: Texas Pulls Away From Texas Tech Late, Wins 34-13

Texas and Texas Tech both came into tonight's game looking to get a win to turn their season around, and the Longhorns were the ones that were able to get that done.

The Red Raiders were leading 13-10 in the second-string quarterback when QB Patrick Mahomes - who was starting for the injured Davis Webb - was knocked out of the game with the concussion. Walk-on third-stringer Vincent Testaverde (son of NFL quarterback Vinny Testaverde) was forced into action, and the Red Raiders didn't score another point for the rest of the game.

Texas added a touchdown before halftime to take a 17-13 lead into break, then really broke the game open with two touchdowns in a two and a half minute span to start the fourth quarter.

Turning Point: At the end of the 3rd quarter, Texas converted on a 4th-and-inches deep in Texas Tech territory, keeping their drive alive instead of settling for a field goal. The Longhorns wound up scoring a touchdown on that drive, extending their lead to 27-13 and putting the Red Raiders away for good.

Key Stat: Texas out-rushed Texas Tech 242-154, which highlights how they were able to control the tempo and pace of this game. The Red Raiders like to play fast and get up-and-down the field, while Texas was able to turn this game into a grind-it-out affair.

Texas MVP: Wide receiver John Harris was the Longhorns' only threat in a passing game, catching five passes for 165 yards. To give you some context, quarterback Tyrone Swoopes only threw for 228 yards in the game.

Texas Tech MVP: Running back DeAndre Washington took on a larger role for Tech's offense after Mahomes went down. He carried the ball 16 times for 97 yards in the game.

What’s Next? Texas will look to start a winning streak against a tough West Virginia team next weekend, while the Red Raiders have a bye week before facing a surging Oklahoma squad on November 15.
