Shoulder problems force Texas A&M defensive lineman Jay Arnold out of football

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M defensive lineman Jay Arnold, a fan favorite for his colorful takes on life via Twitter, is hanging up the helmet for good because of a troublesome shoulder.

Arnold wasn’t listed on A&M’s updated roster, and he said Thursday, “The shoulder wasn’t going to hold up for another season,” so doctors advised him to retire from football.

Arnold played in 11 games last year as a sophomore for the 8-5 Aggies, collecting 1.5 sacks and nine tackles overall.

Defensive line has been a point of emphasis in recruiting for coach Kevin Sumlin over the past couple of years, and A&M returns the likes of Myles Garrett, Daeshon Hall, Julien Obioha, Alonzo Williams, Hardreck Walker and Zaycoven Henderson, and has added five-star tackle Daylon Mack this summer.
