DOHA, Qatar — Third-seeded Tomas Berdych advanced to the second round of the Qatar Open by beating Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 7-5, 6-4 on Tuesday.
The sixth-ranked Czech reached the Qatar Open final last year, losing to David Ferrer of Spain.
Berdych struggled with his first serve against Stahovsky, but he only dropped serve once and faced only two break points.
