PARIS — In a different era, fans and followers of Swedish tennis would have viewed a day like Sunday at the French Open as a disaster.
There were only two Swedes in the men’s singles tournament — Elias Ymer and Christian Lindell — and both were beaten in the first round on opening day at Roland Garros without winning so much as a set.
After Sweden’s victory at the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night, this was certainly a much less triumphant afternoon. But for the country that once produced Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander, Sunday — weird but true — actually represented tennis progress.
