Pinellas mum on Atlanta Braves' flirtation with Venice spring training site

CLEARWATER – The Atlanta Braves, named as partners in a proposed $662 million sports complex at the former Toytown Landfill, now are negotiating to build a spring training complex in Sarasota County.

The Sarasota County Commission on Tuesday authorized negotiations with the team regarding a 7,500-seat stadium in a master-planned community called West Villages off of U.S. 41 in Venice, according to a county news release.

Braves President John Schuerholz said the team is “excited and appreciative” to work with the county and West Villages on a potential state-of-the art spring training facility, the release says.

The announcement comes as Pinellas County continues negotiations on the SportsPark proposal submitted in September.
