With new tax law signed, Syracuse urges fans to take advantage of tax write-off before Dec. 29

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The tax overhaul signed into law on Friday by President Donald Trump will eliminate a popular tax write-off that allowed some Syracuse fans to count a significant portion of their season-ticket payments as a charitable contribution.

Since the 1980s, Syracuse and other colleges have required fans to make a mandatory "donation" in order to buy the right to seats in better sections of their arenas, a process that many have compared to the personal seat license charges assessed in professional sports.

By calling this a charitable "donation," fans have traditionally been able to write-off 80 percent of the donation fee (but not the ticket price) if they itemize their taxes.
