Syracuse basketball, Duke hope familiarity with zones can help offenses

Omaha, Neb. -- There will be no secrets when Syracuse plays Duke in the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 on Friday night here at the CenturyLink Center.

Syracuse plays a zone defense. The 2-3 zone has been a staple of Jim Boeheim's system for years.

Duke also plays zone. It's a recent development. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is a Bob Knight disciple and a man-to-man man.

But Krzyzewski spent 11 summers picking Boeheim's brain about the zone during their time with the U.S. Olympic basketball team and this year, out of desperation, Krzyzewski turned to the zone to hide his team's man-to-man shortcomings.
