Manchester United romped to the title, winning it by a huge 18-point margin, ahead of Arsenal, while Leeds United became challengers at the top. A David Whetherall goal in a 1-0 win over Liverpool saw Bradford City retain their top-flight spot in dramatic circumstances, while Wimbledon, Sheffield Wednesday and Watford were all relegated. Chelsea spent big on Chris Sutton but had to settle for fifth spot, Thierry Henry joined Arsenal, while Houllier continued his Anfield revolution with Steven Gerrard continuing his emergence along with Michael Owen, and Stephane Henchoz and Sami Hyypia arriving to form a central defensive partnership.
