Wainwright fans Goldschmidt to escape jam in third

PHOENIX • Cardinals righthander Adam Wainwright, who sparkled in his last start by holding Pittsburgh to two hits and two runs over seven innings, blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks for three innings on Wednesday night, pitching out of a bases-loaded, one-out spot in the third.

Rey Fuentes and Jeff Mathis singled to open the inning. Pitcher Zack Godley, who sacrificed perfectly as a pinch hitter in the decisive 10th inning on Tuesday, was feeble in this bunt attempt, striking out.

Wainwright walked Daniel Descalso on a checked-swing, full-count pitch to load the bases and David Peralta lined to left.
