JUPITER, Fla. • Monday’s Cardinals workout will feature some sort of intra-squad game, likely to be pitched by coaches, after some early concentration on fundamentals. Manager Mike Matheny allowed that Tuesday might be an off day before the exhibition season begins on Wednesday here against unbeaten (6-0) Florida Atlantic University Florida.
“We’ll see,” said Matheny before Sunday’s drills. “We want to see the effort and attitude level the next two days.”
It used to be that pitchers actually faced hitters in intra-squad games but Matheny said he never had been a big fan of that and said longtime Cardinals manager Red Schoendienst, a special instructor in camp, told Matheny that he didn’t like that concept either.
