Carlos Martinez, seeking his third straight victory for the Cardinals, throttled the Chicago Cubs on three hits for seven innings Thursday at Busch Stadium and held a 4-1 lead. Rain began falling in the seventh but umpiring crew chief Gerry Davis let the game continue through the top of the inning before calling a halt as the Cardinals were about to hit in their half.
Martinez got a bit wild in the top of the sixth, walking Ben Zobrist on five pitches and, after getting one out, falling behind Kris Bryant at 3-0. But the Cubs’ power hitter, receiving the "swing away" sign at 3-0, flied to right.
