Cardinals' defense hurts, then helps before game is called

JUPITER, Fla. • The Cardinals’ defense stumbled, then starred Tuesday against Washington in an exhibition game that was halted in the fourth inning by threatening weather, with thunder heard first, then lightning seen next and with rain presumably on the way.

Washington had a 1-0 lead with two out in the top of the inning when the game was called off.

In the second inning, Cardinals shortstop Jedd Gyorko couldn’t make connections with catcher Yadier Molina’s throw on Chris Heisey’s attempt to steal second. Heisey wound up at third as the ball sailed into center field.
