JUPITER, Fla. • During his speech at the St. Louis Baseball Writers' Dinner this winter, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny turned away from the podium to face the members of the 1967 World Series champion Cardinals who were seated behind him.
A humble request was coming.
He wanted to make sure it hit home.
"It is so rare and special for an organization to have so many legends who stay active," Matheny said that night at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel. "I just want to continue to throw that out there, and make sure that these legends know how much of an impact they make in our organization.
