Even though the St. Louis Cardinals had no game on the slate for Thursday, the team nonetheless did not take the day off. The Cardinals optioned righthanded reliever Miguel Socolovich to Triple-A Memphis. The move opens a spot on the 25-man roster that will presumably be filled by Jon Jay, who is wrapping up a rehab stint with Low-A Peoria.
The demotion of Socolovich decreases the active roster's reliever population by one and reestablishes the composition most typical on a major-league 25-man: 13 position players to 12 pitchers (and seven relievers).
