Manager Mike Matheny said he had a couple of conversations with young righthander Carlos Martinez and said he probably would have another after Martinez had lost control of his emotions to the point on Thursday where, in a fashion, he flashed the “We’re No. 1” sign to the Colorado dugout.
“He understands better,” said Matheny, who hasn’t been the only person in uniform to try to help. Making reference to the death of good friend Oscar Taveras, Matheny said, “With everything that’s happened this winter, with Carlos being the young player that he is, this whole team has kind of taken it on themselves .
