Sporting KC beats San Jose Earthquakes 2-1, bolstering playoff hopes

The drought commenced on April 17 in front of national TV audience, inside the home park of the top team in the MLS Western Conference. On that evening, Sporting Kansas City had scored an early goal, only to watch FC Dallas respond with two of its own to escape with a victory.

The blown lead started a string of 12 road matches without a single victory.

Some 168 days later, in the midst of a battle for its postseason lives, Sporting concluded the drought in the unlikeliest of settings.

After relinquishing an early lead, Sporting used Kevin Ellis’ back-heel goal in the 81st minute for a 2-1 road win Saturday, its first victory in San Jose since 2001.
