Matt Wallner did a lot of things in 2017 no other freshman in Southern Miss history has ever done.

On Tuesday, the Minnesota native added another accomplishment to the list.

Wallner became the first Golden Eagle to be named National Freshman Hitter of the Year. The 6-foot-5 outfielder took home the honor courtesy of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

In his first season at Southern Miss, Wallner hit .336, and broke the school records for home runs (19) and runs batted in (63) by a freshman.
