USM coaches hopeful Mullens can play at LSU

Southern Miss (4-2) is hopeful quarterback Nick Mullens will play Saturday at LSU (3-2).

Optimistic even. But certain? Not quite yet.

“That’s something we’ll look at day-to-day,” said first-year football coach Jay Hopson. “We’ll see how he does in practice.”

Mullens injured the thumb on his throwing hand during last week’s 55-32 loss at UTSA. It happened on a play in the third quarter when the senior threw a long pass intended for receiver D.J. Thompson. On the follow-through, Mullens’ hand made contact with a Roadrunner defender’s helmet. Mullens immediately left the game and was replaced by backup Parker Adamson, who was in for five plays.
