EL PASO, Texas – Southern Miss engineered a methodical, effective drive to open Saturday’s 34-7 win at UTEP.
Exactly the type of start the football team was looking for in its Conference USA opener after it struggled in a loss to Troy last week.
But after taking a 3-0 lead, the Golden Eagles reverted back to the team that saw its six-game home winning streak snapped one week ago. Senior quarterback Nick Mullens went cold and the defense gave up a 68-yard touchdown run to the Miners’ Aaron Jones to fall behind 7-3.
That’s when Mullens found a rhythm.
