Bye week comes at right time for Southern Miss

BATON ROUGE, La. — The way Nick Mullens sees it, Southern Miss has reached a crossroads.

The Golden Eagles, led by their senior quarterback, have proven they have what it takes to be a quality football team. A 4-1 start, which includes a season opening conquest at the SEC’s Kentucky (3-3), is hard evidence.

Conversely, Southern Miss has displayed drastically different results — especially in recent weeks. First-year coach Jay Hopson’s team gave up a season-high 532 yards in an Oct. 7 road loss at UTSA before allowing 28 points in the third quarter (the second straight week the team’s opponent has scored four touchdowns in a single quarter) of Saturday’s setback at LSU.
