Eight charged in pill mill probe

When a pharmacy technician asked Lynn Averill why she was prescribing oxycodone and methadone to most of her patients, the former Plantation doctor shouted back, "Because I'm a doctor!" according to a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

Eight patients died within days after visiting Averill at the Real Care Medical Group clinic in Plantation and receiving multiple prescriptions from her in 2010, court documents show. According to the toxicology reports, a majority of the deaths were attributed to "multiple drug toxicity."

A five-year investigation into Averill and the pain clinic culminated Wednesday in the arrests of Averill and seven others associated with the clinic.
