Frank Martin fills assistant vacancy with experienced coach

What was long suspected is now official – Chuck Martin has been hired at South Carolina.

Frank Martin hired the former Indiana assistant Monday to replace Matt Figger, who took the head coaching job at Austin Peay shortly after the Final Four.

Chuck Martin, a native of the Bronx, N.Y., has spent nearly 20 years across the college and NBA ranks, including five years as head coach at Marist. He assisted at Manhattan, Massachusetts, Drexel, St. John’s and Memphis, where he helped Kentucky coach John Calipari lead the Tigers to the 2008 NCAA championship game.

Martin was with Oklahoma City in the NBA before returning to college, assisting Tom Crean with the Hoosiers for three seasons.
