South Alabama signee Cole Watts drafted by Houston Astros

South Alabama signee Cole Watts, a California junior college pitcher, was selected Wednesday by the Houston Astros in the 2017 MLB draft.

Watts, a 6-foot-4 left-hander, went in the 31st round with the No. 931 overall pick. He signed with the Jaguars last month after spending two years at Skyline College in California.

Watts was Skyline's closer this past season, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.90 ERA, striking out 58 in 42.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Watts is the third South Alabama signee drafted this year, following T.R. Miller pitcher JoJo Booker (fifth round, Angels) and catcher Hunter Brittain (15th round, also Angels).
