HEROES

There has always been an element of the old-school comic book hero about Wayne Rooney's career. The precocious, young talent bursting into the first team when most boys his age were worrying about exams. The fearlessness with which he took to international football. The big-money move to what was then arguably the biggest club in the world. That late, match-saving free kick was straight out of the comic book too: an incredible, last-minute hit when almost all hope had gone.
