The Conspiracy Theory

The Conspiracy Theory is mostly recognized as being a topic of controversial conversation amongst Americans. However, this theory is slowly beginning to become a part of conversation in Spain, relating to their beloved La Liga football.

The past couple of weeks, Real Madrid has managed to create a gap they would have never dreamed about 3 short years ago. However, the merengues of Mourinho have worked hard and have created a 10-point gap between them and their bitter rivals, FC Barcelona. Madrid has worked hard, yes, but what critics are beginning to notice is that controversy seems to play a protagonist role in almost every one of their matches. Whether is is an unpunished foul, or an unfair red, the merengues have seen it all.

Perhaps the most known controversial play so far was that against the Catalan giants. After being tackled, Lionel Messi fell to the ground, and while waiting for help, defender Pepe almost purposefully stepped on his hand. The referee did absolutely nothing. Blaugrana fans and players were extremely bothered by the fact that nothing was done during the match, but more-so because nothing was done after the match. How could such a controversy-filled play be left alone? Not only did the cules react strongly, but even the Madrid players uncomfortably spoke out in the locker room. The protagonists to speaking up were keeper Iker Casillas and defender Sergio Ramos. They seemingly told their coach that they were tired of having to cover for their teammates and their coach by keeping their mouth shut in press conferences. They also claimed that they were bothered at how Mourinho made an extra effort to defend the Portuguese players on the team. Tension in the locker room only added gasoline to the controversy.
