Sports of The Times: Shadows of 1999 One Step Closer to Fading in 2015

MONTREAL — The United States defender Ali Krieger admitted that she had thought and thought about the last time the United States won the Women’s World Cup.

She thought about it during the day Tuesday, before the United States beat Germany, 2-0, in the World Cup semifinal here. And she thought about it weeks before, when this tournament began.

“Honestly, it’s gone through my mind so many times, almost every day,” Krieger told me after Tuesday’s game.
