Because the game clock doesn't stop, the referee can add on extra time at the end of each half based on how much game time was lost to injuries or other stoppages. This stoppage-time period typically lasts 3-5 minutes, but can be shorter (if the game is a rout, or if no time was lost to stoppages) or longer (if a major injury or other event caused a significant delay).

In real time, an average soccer match lasts for roughly an hour and 50 minutes from kickoff to the final whistle.

World Cup matches likely won't start at the exact time listed (allowing time for pregame festivities), but once the whistle blows, you can expect the game to last about an hour and 50 minutes from start to finish.
