The former Manchester United and England defender has retired from professional soccer.

Rio Ferdinand has announced his retirement from professional soccer.

The former Manchester United, West Ham and Leeds United defender announced his decision live on BT Sport as part of the station's FA Cup final coverage Saturday.

Ferdinand, who captained his country and played at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, was released by QPR on Wednesday following its relegation from the Premier League.

In addition to winning 81 England caps, Ferdinand enjoyed considerable success at the club level with United, winning six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League during his time at Old Trafford.
