Clint Dempsey’s goal in stoppage time allows Sounders to salvage point in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — The running joke this season has been to not bother tuning into a Sounders game until things head to stoppage time.

That held true Sunday night as the visitors, down a man the entire second half, saw Clint Dempsey head home the equalizer during the five extra minutes added to the match at Providence Park. Dempsey’s goal knotted the score at 2-2 and helped the Sounders salvage a crucial point from a game they appeared to have given away with some sloppy play toward the end of the opening half.

It marked the fourth game this season in which the Sounders have either tied a game or surrendered an equalizer in the waning moments.
