Although the new name of the Mariners home ballpark — T-Mobile Park — was announced in December, it got real today with the removal of the Safeco Field letters above the Home Plate Gate at the corner of First Avenue & Edgar Martinez Drive.
A crew from Tube Art, a SoDo-based lighted signage company, took down the iconic letters, one at a time, Wednesday morning. The letters will be decommissioned (to properly dispose of the mercury in the neon tubes) and the aluminum will be recycled. Except for the letter S, which the Mariners are keeping.
