Mariners preview: Six pitchers gunning for final two rotation spots

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto lauded the depth in his starting rotation at last month's pre-spring training luncheon, contending Seattle has as many as eight or nine legitimate candidates that could leave spring training on the 25-man roster.

"I think our starting pitching staff is as deep as anyone's in the division," said Dipoto, who spent the previous three-and-a-half seasons as the Los Angeles Angels general manager.

If Dipoto is right, that would be a stark contrast from the 2015 season, when a Mariners rotation billed as a strength finished the season with a 4.17 ERA, ninth in the American League.
