Mariners’ James Paxton uses latest struggles as learning experience

After allowing five runs in five innings in a loss to the Cardinals, Paxton wanted to use his outing as another class in his continuing education: Even when he’s not at his best, he has to pitch longer and with less damage.

It was not his best start, and he did not have his best stuff, and somewhere out of that little mess, Mariners starter James Paxton emerged with a lesson.

Paxton gave up five runs in five innings in Sunday’s 11-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Safeco Field. He gave up a triple and double to the first two batters.
