A lot has changed since the Mariners ended their disappointing 2015. Finishing out the season without GM Jack Zduriencik, who was fired at the end of August, the Mariners posted an underwhelming 76-86 record in a year they were picked by many to go deep in the playoffs.

The Mariners hired Jerry Dipoto as the general manager, signaling a departure from Zduriencik’s slugging-focused roster philosophy and ushering in the era of statistical analysis and sabermetrics. Formerly with the Los Angeles Angels, Dipoto quickly got to work overhauling Seattle’s big-league roster and minor-league system.
