San Jose State resurrects men's track and field program

SAN JOSE -- San Jose State officials on Monday announced the return of men's track and field after a three-decade absence as some of the school's biggest stars convened to mark the moment and pay tribute to a bygone era lovingly known as "Speed City."

None were better known than the men who took the stage in front of a 22-foot sculpture between Clark and Tower halls that commemorates the black-gloved salute by San Jose State Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos. The controversial medal winners of the 1968 Mexico City Games joined sociologist Harry Edwards on stage for announcement timed four days before the opening of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
