Thornton, Burns on Canada’s World Cup roster

Sharks center Joe Thornton and defenseman Brent Burns were among the final seven players added to Team Canada for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey tournament to be held from Sept. 17-Oct. 1.

Canada’s early roster has five centers, but Thornton couldn’t be overlooked with the kind of season he’s had, even though he’ll turn 37 in July. Thornton led San Jose with 82 points in the regular season and has 18 points in 18 playoff games.

Burns, too, could not be ignored after scoring a career-high 27 goals and 75 points during the season, followed by six goals and 20 points in the playoffs.
