Sharks’ Torres suspended for half of season

NEW YORK — Sharks forward Raffi Torres will miss half the season and lose more than $440,000 in salary after being suspended by the NHL on Monday for a hit on Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg.

The league said the 41-game suspension without pay was for interference and an illegal check to the head against Silfverberg during the first period of a preseason game in Anaheim on Saturday. Torres was assessed a match penalty for the illegal check to the head.

Based on his average annual salary, Torres will forfeit $440,860. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
