San Jose Earthquakes hire former EPL striker as assistant coach

SAN JOSE — Coach Dominic Kinnear completed the Earthquakes’ coaching staff Saturday with the hiring of former English Premier League striker John Spencer.

Kinnear added Spencer, 46, to replace Ian Russell, who became coach of San Jose’s minor league affiliate in Reno. Spencer joins long-time Kinnear assistants Steve Ralston and Tim Hanley.

“He holds himself and everyone in the locker room responsible for how the team acts and how the team performs,” said Kinnear, who gave Spencer his coaching start in Houston from 2006-10.

Spencer coached the Portland Timbers during their inaugural Major League Soccer season in 2011 before getting sacked as the team struggled in 2012.
