After pregame violence among fans, Club America supporters savor rare chance to watch team in San Jose

SAN JOSE — A sea of yellow jerseys covered Avaya Stadium and its surrounding areas for hours before Sunday’s kickoff.

Liga MX squads Club America and Monarcas de Morelia met for a friendly match, but you wouldn’t know it was an exhibition based off the atmosphere exuded from the sold-out crowd in San Jose.

Despite a pre-game incident in which fans from opposing teams began throwing rocks and bottles at each other, it was a festive mood from supporters of both sides once the match began.

While the stadium was full of yellow, both America and Morelia’s primary color, chants from the Monarcas fans were drowned out by the large contingent of Club America fans.
