Idle pursuits: Giants pitchers stalled by Tommy John surgery used their gap year in different ways

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Giants left-hander Will Smith will undergo Tommy John surgery in a few days, and then begin the relentlessly dull rehab process.

He will spend hours upon hours repeating the same exercises and undergoing the same treatments to increase his range of motion, stabilize his core and work every muscle fiber in his left arm.

It can feel like a 12-month prison sentence. But if Smith listens to the advice of his Giants teammates, he’ll treat it more like a gap year – a free time to pick up a hobby, learn a skill or broaden horizons.
