The Giants got what they paid for in 2016, when their $220 million investment in Cueto and Samardzija resulted in the kind of rotation stability that any club would envy. Only the Cubs received more innings from their rotation than the Giants, whose 10 complete games led the major leagues. Bumgarner, Cueto and Samardzija each topped 200 innings as the Giants had three pitchers among the NL’s top five in outs recorded. Bumgarner even set regular-season career bests in innings and strikeouts while leading all major leaguers in pitches thrown — and then tossed a shutout in the NL Wild Card Game at New York’s Citi Field.
