Giants cannot gain traction, fall meekly to Padres

SAN DIEGO - Here is a fun fact sure to warm the hearts of fans as they absorb the reality that the Giants are going to run out of season before they run into a hot streak:

With eight regular-season games left, the Giants have not clinched a winning season, yet their hopes for a fourth consecutive even-year championship still live.

On Friday night, the Giants could not beat baseball hobo Edwin Jackson and his 6.00 ERA to build on their series-opening win at Petco Park. Instead, the Padres enjoyed a far-too-easy 7-2 victory.

Down 3-0, the Giants got a two-run Buster Posey double in the fifth inning, a microburst of joy that was squashed when the Padres scored four off left-hander Matt Reynolds in the bottom of inning.
