SF Giants News: Mike Leake To Miss Scheduled Start With Strained Hamstring

Right-handed pitcher Mike Leake had a solid performance in his debut with the SF Giants last sunday at Texas, giving up just two runs on a Josh Hamilton home run in a hard-luck 2-1 loss to the Rangers. Now, it appears Leake will have to wait to follow up his initial outing.

Per Chris Haft of MLB.com, "San Francisco's prized Trade Deadline acquisition will miss his scheduled start Friday against the Chicago Cubs with a mild strain of his left hamstring. Ryan Vogelsong, sent to the bullpen following the All-Star break, will replace Leake."

SF Giants manager Bruce Bochy says Leake injured his hamstring during a between-starts workout in Atlanta. He added that Leake underwent an MRI to confirm the strain.

"He thought it was a cramp, but it didn't go away," Bochy said.

Bochy is hopeful that Leake will make his next start, but wasn't able to "say for sure."

For now, Ryan Vogelsong has been moved into the rotation and into Friday's starting slot. The SF Giants wouldn't technically have to use Vogelsong for a second time till August 15th taking this coming Monday's off day into account. That gives the Giants plenty of time to keep tabs on Leake and make a decision later next week.
