Report: Matt Cain to see Dr. James Andrews, Tommy John surgery a possibility?

In this Giants rumors and news update, San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain will be seeking a second opinion on his inflamed right elbow from esteemed surgeon Dr. James Andrews, per Andrew Baggarly of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

According to Matt Snyder of CBS Sports, a visit to the doctor famous for the dreaded Tommy John surgery doesn't mean that Cain is facing such an operation:

Now, pump the brakes on the freak out here, Giants fans. Visits to Dr. Andrews don't always end with Tommy John surgery. He often recommends every possible path to avoiding surgery. Just repeat after me: This is just a visit ... this is just a visit ... this is just a visit.

However, in the eyes of former Giants pitcher Shawn Estes, a visit to Andrews could mean that there is more trouble than meets the eye:

The 29-year-old righty was placed on the disabled list on July 21st, retroactive to July 11th, with elbow discomfort. Cain has indicated that he doesn't feel like he's dealing with anything worse than bone chips, but even that is speculative until a full diagnosis has been given by Andrews.

Cain is 2-7 this season with a 4.18 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 15 starts.
