Billy Pierce, pitcher on Giants’ 1962 World Series team, dies

CHICAGO — Billy Pierce, a seven-time All-Star pitcher who was a key member of the Giants’ 1962 pennant-winning team and spent most of his 18 years in the majors with the Chicago White Sox, died Friday at 88.

Mr. Pierce died in the Chicago suburb of Palos Heights, Ill., after a battle with gall bladder cancer, his family said.

“Billy was a true gentleman and an outstanding player who made a lasting impression during his time with the Giants, including his contributions as a member of the 1962 World Series team,” the Giants said in a statement.
