Tomsula on turf: 'We're not going to put them at risk'

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers have their first eight practices of training camp scheduled for Levi’s Stadium. But during the early portion of their first practice of camp on Saturday night, the field looked as if it might not last for one full practice.

During the individual portion of practice the turf outside the numbers got chewed up during the work of the wide receivers and defensive backs, creating large divots. The damage to the grass was not as bad as last summer when then-coach Jim Harbaugh took his players off the field because of the risk of injuries.
