Productive placeholder? Stats suggest 49ers QB Hoyer could shine

The quarterback who is probably just keeping the seat warm has quietly been fairly hot the past two seasons.

Yes, Brian Hoyer, the 49ers presumptive starter whose signing was met with more than a few yawns, has put up some numbers that will surprise many over the past two seasons with the Texans (2015) and Bears (2016): 25 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 93.7 passer rating.

Hoyer, 31, isn’t the 49ers’ long-term answer at the position, but his recent body of work suggests he could be a surprisingly strong placeholder in 2017.

On March 10, a day after Hoyer was officially signed, I jokingly asked him if he ever wanted to carry a billboard letting the world know about his recent 25-7 TD-to-INT ratio.
